Phishing

Updated : Tuesday 2 February 2010

Phishing consists of sending you a spam designed to look like a message from a password-protected service you use regularly. Typically, the message invites you to go to the protected website (your bank or PayPal, for instance), to obtain a reimbursement, update your data or download an antivirus programme. You click on the link, in the belief that the message comes from your bank, and enter your password, thus giving the fraudster access to your password or bank card number.

  • It can’t be said often enough, on the web, as in the street, you should never give out your codes or confidential data to strangers. By definition, most of the time, you can’t see who is communicating with you online and you have no way of checking their identity. If in doubt, don’t give it out.
