Pay per post

Updated : Tuesday 2 February 2010

This site enables companies to promote their products and services by generating positive buzz. How does it work? The company must buy posts (positive comments, obviously), which are sent to a list of opinion-leader bloggers. The site claims to have 265 000 bloggers. In fact, the posts written by these bloggers who belong to the Pay per Post network are in some way sponsored by a company.

  • This technique is proving controversial in the blogosphere, as it means posts are being used for commercial ends and bloggers are being exploited! However, it is becoming increasingly common. What everyone agrees on is that it is wrong to send posts that have the appearance of comments from independent internet users praising a product, when in fact they are either being sent by the company or it is paying the bloggers to do it. This practice is known as astroturfing after the artificial grass used in football stadiums. EBay tried this out, and triggered a controversy. Its posts were jokily worded and full of spelling errors, supposedly to make them look authentic (it’s common knowledge that real bloggers make mistakes!).
