- The word nerd was originally a pejorative term for someone who spent most of their waking hours on their PC or Mac, without being a computer expert. Not a geek, then. A nerd was socially handicapped and preferred to live in the virtual world. Today, though, nerd is shedding its pejorative connotations and is increasingly used in current parlance to refer to a web 2.0 fanatic, which is more cool than being a geek. So in fact, when someone calls you a nerd, it’s no longer an insult but a compliment!
