Professional social network with over 100 million subscribers, professional people wishing to expand their address books. Subscription to this network is free, unless you want additional functionalities, in which case you’ll need to get out the plastic to obtain the coveted "premium" status.

  • More upmarket and international than Viadeo, and particularly big in the USA, it includes managers of small and medium-sized businesses, CEOs, group and company directors. It has formed partnerships with at least one national professional recruitment and training agency. LinkedIn enables jobseekers to take a vacancy advertised by these agencies and very specifically identify other members of their LinkedIn network working for the company in question or in the same sector. They can use their network to fine-tune their exploration of the potential market, and also search by sector, company or country. They can keep up to date with network news, dialogue with other members and connect to the various job offers. I have yet to test this service, so watch this space…

LinkedIn gives you the chance to take part in discussion groups, which are the equivalent of the hubs on Viadeo. You can start your own group or take part in the ones set up by other members.
