Hashtag

Updated : Tuesday 2 February 2010

A hashtag is to Twitter what a tag is to the internet in general. It’s a key word that defines the topic you are writing about on Twitter thus making it easier to search for information on that topic. A Twitter hashtag is created by placing the hash or pound (#) sign in front of the key word. So, if you are writing about Obama, you make Obama your hashtag by placing a # in front of it, so anyone interested in the subject who searches this hashtag can access your Tweet (message).

  • By going to search.twitter.com (the Twitter search engine), you can find a list of the current most frequently used hashtags, just below the search box. The hashtag makes monitoring easier, by allowing you to follow events or current topics on Twitter in real time. To make sure no one is saying bad things about your company, hashtag your company name and away you go. One more tip: if you want to look really cutting edge, scatter your logos, catalogue or promotional material with # followed by a tag (a key name). Television programmes are starting to use this technique of including a hashtag in their programme publicity.
