Buzz marketing

Updated : Tuesday 2 February 2010

Buzz marketing is the use of word-of-mouth for promotional purposes. It is a marketing technique consisting of creating “noise” around a new product or offer. By extension, buzz means anything that’s generating noise on the web.

  • Buzz can be positive when used for promotional purposes, at least that’s what all those companies are hoping that are investing more and more in eye-catching online clips to provoke a reaction or make people laugh, thus bringing their company to the attention of internet users. But it can also be negative and precipitate a crisis, like the video of a French government minister that recently spread like wildfire across the internet and triggered a heated debate. He was seen joking with a party member that, “When there’s just one, it’s fine, it’s when there are lots of them that the problems start”, referring to people — like the party member, as it happened — of Arab origin. Videos like this can be seen by millions of internet users. Positive or negative — either way, buzz has become part of our daily lives. The word buzz has also started to appear in dictionaries, a sign that the vocabulary of the internet is emerging from its ghetto and infiltrating magazines, television and the office. It’s the language of the moment, and anyone with a claim to be cool or at the cutting edge needs to know it. When did you last see a magazine that didn’t have a “Buzz” or “Buzz news” column?
